Sensory Deprivation Tank Sessions
As part of our holistic approach to physical and mental wellness, Rejuvenation Wellness & Medispa offers sensory deprivation treatment, also known as flotation therapy.
A sensory deprivation (or flotation) tank is a tank that is filled with a foot or less of salt water and used for restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST).
This type of therapy was designed in 1954 by an American physician and neuroscientist named John C. Lilly to study the origins of consciousness by removing all external stimuli. Over the years, sensory deprivation therapy evolved and began being studied for possible health benefits.
Benefits of Flotation Therapy
Today, float therapy is widely used around the globe. Studies suggest that this form of therapy may be a valuable alternative to other stress-management techniques. Some of the reported benefits of floating in a sensory deprivation tank include:
- Muscle relaxation and recovery
- Better sleeping habits
- Effective pain management
- Decrease in stress and anxiety
- Improved mood and sense of well-being
- Increased optimism
What to Expect during Flotation Therapy
Prior to your therapy, you must refrain from drinking caffeine, but we recommend that you eat a small snack 30 minutes before your appointment. Do not shave or wax before your therapy and remove your contacts if you wear them.
When you arrive for your therapy, we’ll cover the basics with you and answer any questions you may have. Prior to your session, you will shower, put in a pair of earplugs, and then step into the flotation tank.
When you are ready, turn off the lights and float in the tank in total darkness. You won’t be fighting gravity as the water will contain approximately 850 pounds of Epsom salt, allowing you to your lie on your back.
During your float, the water will be kept at 93.5 degrees, which is skin-receptor neutral, so you won’t be able to distinguish between your body and the water. Your ears will stay just below the water and, because the room is insulated against sound, none of the noises from outside will reach or distract you. During this experience, your brain waves will slow down and your body will get to rest and heal without stress.
As the float ends, music will fade in, easing you out of your float. You may then turn on the lights and emerge from the tank when you’re ready, after which you will shower again to rinse off the salt water, get dressed, and relax for a while longer in our spa.
